What's this all about then? It's a blog. We get that. How is reading this blog going to change your life, you may ask yourself. It isn't... or at least it shouldn't. One goal of this blog is to examine how web based communications and connections can be used as a tool to enhance, not replace, traditional face to face information exchanges.
So why bother with all of this? Are there not countless blogs, books, videos, and other media out there doing exactly this? I am sure there are, in fact I know there are. And hopefully, this experiment will help me to explore and utilize those references to create new ways to tie together information across a multitude of formats.
I have not updated in quite some time, as we have been extremely busy at work, and out of town a bit too. Had a good lunch today with Patrick Hunt and continued our mind meld on all the usual tingz.
I have formulated some official thoughts of the usefulness of some of the social networking sites I have linked together, and hope to post regarding that this weekend. Facebook is certainly growing on me, though I still think that it is definitely more “personal” oriented than other sites, but still has a way to go as a networking / business tool. The big thing I am tracking is how often I am visiting all these sites, which is really easy to do via my lifestream, and in that regard, LinkedIn is actualling falling a good bit behind… but I digress, more on all this later when I am not just off a 14 hour day.
As web technologies progress, websites and web applications are becoming more responsive, providing us with more ways and techniques to interact with the users. Form, more than ever, has been superseded by function.
Well, it has been about ten days since I installed Wordpress and started blogging. I have connected a bunch of social networking accounts to this blog, and am in the process evaluating their usefulness. My measurement goals are about 80% centered around business networking, with the remaining 20% focusing on personal relationships and connections. So far, LinkedIn, Digg, and surprisingly, Twitter, are my favorites, and they each serve very different segments. LinkedIn seems to be an excellent resource for business relationship management and historical career records, Digg is, of course, probably the best user driven news site on the Internet, and Twitter does exactly what it says, it answers the question “Whatcha doin’”.
Facebook, which I just signed up for yesterday, is my absolute least favorite, both in interface, usefulness, and content. I have not really explored it fully, and I see some functionality that looks to be useful, so I will not yet make a final call on that site, but overall, I did not like it, and it felt very out of place and disconnected to me.
Over the next few months, I plan on writing up full reviews of all of these sites and resources, but I want to give each of them a fair shake until then, and work on developing some sort of reviewing methodology to judge them by, hopefully more on this soon. Until then!
This is not exactly following the primary subject matter of this blog, but it was just too funny to pass up. Enjoy (and if this offends, please lighten up!)
This is an amazing achievement. One of my clients that we are developing a website for has been investigating the LEEDS stanadards and it is quite a restrictive process.
From Digg:
After four years of construction the world’s most sustainable skyscraper is nearly completed! Situated at One Bryant park in Midtown Manhattan, the crystalline structure will be the first high-rise to receive LEED Platinum certification.
